The following song was written by a teenager to describe their counselling process and then played on the guitar and sung in session.
‘INSIDE’
It’s literally your job per say
To listen to people complain all day
So, I guess it’s my turn to say
This is more than ADHD
This is more than friends and family
There’s a lot going on, on my mind
And I always find a way to
Somehow hide what’s going on
On the inside…
What’s going on
On the inside…
Maybe if I put a smile on the outside
I’ll never have to face
What’s on the inside
Lately, I’ve neglected my own safety
But seeing you every week has
Me feeling a little less weak
Recently, it’s been real scary
I feel like I lost myself in a battle
Instead of fighting back
I just stood around like some cattle
This is more than ADHD
This is more than friends and family
There’s a lot going on, on my mind
And I always find a way to
Somehow hide what’s going on
On the inside…
What’s going on
On the inside…
Maybe if I put a smile on the outside
I’ll never have to face
What’s on the inside
I’ve been zoning out
More than usual dreaming
About nothing useful
And if I’m to be honest, actually,
I think I’d rather not…
Because honesty is not my friend
I’d rather just play pretend
Sitting with my emotions has me ended
Up in a tearful ocean
Well, I’d rather not dive into
That sea
Be mindful of what’s behind me
What’s behind my back
But never look back
Well, that’s when I felt a reassuring pat
I fell right into the emotion ocean
You help me every time!
Maybe next time I’ll learn to dive…
This is more than ADHD
This is more than friends and family
There’s a lot going on, on my mind
And I always find a way to
Somehow hide what’s going on
On the inside…
What’s going on
On the inside…
Maybe if I put a smile on the outside
I’ll never have to face
What’s on the inside
